Greetings Nokia! Welcome to the real world!

News today has been reporting that Nokia is making two of the smartest moves since they created the Nokia 2160.  A combination in the news that the Symbian OS is on its way out, and that Windows Phone 7 OS is the potential way in has pleased more than one fan of Nokia.  I have been as big of a fan of Nokia over the years as I was of Motorola (read how that turned out here) until recently.

Before my wife had her Cliq and the debacle that followed she had a Nokia 5300, which had enough exchanges to warrant a Nokia 5310, which in turn was exchange for a Nokia Neuron than is now possessed by our 14 year old.  Nokia has been on a downhill slide in the recent years, and that is due in no large part to their inability to grasp modern times and modern technology.  For every wonderful piece of technology that came out into the smart phone arena, Nokia did its best to keep pace.  Of course, when I say keep pace, I mean they started bringing fancy knives to the modern gunfights.
Symbian was doomed from the start, but perhaps it was because by the time Nokia felt that they had their footing, they had to contend not just with iOS, which was Apple creating an entirely new market, but the upstart Android as well.  The power of Google is mighty, moreso than even a long established company like Nokia could contend with.  Too little, too late?  Yes.  And that is the best thing that could happen to Nokia.  Their products, long considered exciting and cutting edge in the dumbphone market, were now stale.  They have nothing left to lose.  So goodbye Symbian, and hello future!
There are rumors that Nokia attempted to get in bed with Android (not in a weird Japanese manga kind of way) but that talks fell through.  Nobody will ever know the full truth, but as big of a fan as I am of Android, I enjoy the idea that WP7 and Nokia can make sweet little phones together.  You know how it goes: When a phone manufacturer and an operating system really, REALLY love each other...
Some days it seems as though companies like Nokia will do everything that they can to produce some of the finest products around, but just like putting lipstick on a pig, what they have done is pretty up some horrible things.  The phones never did much of a good job in living up to the hopes of the Nokia faithful, but true hope looks like it is right around the corner.
I have had my HD7 for 1 1/2 months now, and couldn't be happier with it.  WP7 has its shortcomings, but as that OS grows more mature, and encourages competition in a market that is absolutely DOMINATED by Android and iOS, it will lead to better phones and OS for EVERYONE.  This, my friends, is a good thing.
Nokia has said goodbye to Symbian, and hello to a bright new future, filled with all of the hope and wonder that a new relationship always has.  The future is so bright that they need to wear shades.  Lets just hope that the shades that they put on don't happen to be rose colored.
